Driver Licenses
State law requires that drivers obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of living here. Colorado adult driver licenses, available at age 21, are valid for four years; provisional driver licenses, available at age 18, are valid for three years; and beginner driver licenses, available at age 16, are valid for two years. All applicants must take a written examination. First-time applicants and those seeking to renew revoked or expired licenses must take a driving examination. Licenses cost $15. Vehicle Registration
License Plates
Motorists must display a Colorado license plate on their vehicle within 45 days of moving here. Fees are based on the vehicle's age, weight and taxable value. Plates may be obtained at the following locations:

Emissions Testing
All vehicles operated along Colorado's Front Range, including Boulder, must pass an emissions test. Proof of passing the vehicle emissions test is required at the time of the vehicle's registration. For testing sites, call (303) 205-5600.
Insurance
State law requires automobile owners to carry insurance for bodily injury liability, property damage, personal injury protection (no-fault medical) and uninsured motorist liability provisions. Proof of vehicle insurance is required at time of registration.
